About the course

Burns and scalds are among the most common injuries in the workplace. Rapid treatment of the injury can have a considerable impact on its severity and the burn or scald healing time, so a timely & knowledgeable response is essential.

Every year, around 13,000 people are admitted to hospital for burns or scalds. Many thousands more go to hospital accident and emergency departments.

This course will help with basic first aid when it comes to burns & scalds. You will learn about the anatomy of skin, different types of burns, how to treat them on first response and importantly, when to seek medical help.

Course overview

Here’s what we’ll be covering in each lesson (each lesson is a maximum of 4 mins long, making it easy to quickly make fantastic progress, even if you only have a small amount of time each day).

Lesson 01 - Anatomy of the Skin

• The course kicks off here you’ll learn about the three layers of the skin
• Epidermis
• Dermis
• Hypodermis

Lesson 02 - Burns and Scalds

• Lesson 2 begins with treating burns and scalds
• Explains when to get medical attention
• And ends with an introduction to the signs of a burn or scald

Lesson 03 - Signs of a burn or scald

• Lesson 3 begins by taking a look at what red and peeling skin means
• It goes on to look at blisters and swelling
• And finishes off with a look at white or charred skin

Lesson 04 - Types of Burn

• Lesson 4 begins with looking at superficial epidermal and dermal burns
• It then takes you through deep dermal or partial thickness burns
• And ends with full thickness burns

Lesson 05 - Initial Burn Treatment

• Lesson 5 begins with first aid for burns and when to go to hospital
• It moves on to burn injuries and sunburn,
• Through burns that don’t need medical attention,
• To burns that need medical attention
• And ends with a look at exposure to the sun

Final Test

Complete the final test to prove your knowledge.
