Falls are the most frequent and serious type of accident in people aged 65 and over, with 10,000 falls happening each day. Falls often affect a person physically and mentally – they can result in fractures and broken bones, but also in a lack of confidence and isolation. 

People fall because of a complex mix of factors. To reduce falling, it is important to identify these factors, and recognise those that could signify serious, but treatable, underlying medical problems.

This course will increase awareness and understanding of falls and how best to prevent them. You will learn about the risk factors and causes of falls, as well as how to prevent falls and how to manage them when they happen.It will enable individuals in health and social care environments to provide the best care to patients who have an increased tendency to fall.

• And what counts as a fall

Lesson 02 - Risks of Falls & Injuries

• Lesson 2 looks at each risk factor in turn
• From living alone
• Through medications and long-term health conditions
• To nutrition, alcohol and environment

Lesson 03- The Effects of Falls & Injuries

• Lesson 3 looks at the physical, mental and social impact of a fall, firstly through case study examples
• And then by looking at the potential consequences of each

Lesson 04- What to do in the event of a fall

• Lesson 4 begins with looking at how to create a falls plan
• And ends with a demonstration of how to get up after a fall

Lesson 05- Summary

• Lesson 5 is a summary of key points of your learning so far

Final Test

Complete the final test to prove your knowledge.
