Why being asbestos aware is as crucial now as ever.

Here are 6 reasons to be aware of the materials contained within our buildings.

  1. Historical Use of Asbestos: Asbestos was extensively used in the construction industry in the UK until the late 1990s. Many buildings, including residential, commercial, and public structures, still contain asbestos materials. As a result, there is a significant risk of exposure to asbestos during renovation, maintenance, or demolition activities.
  2. Health Risks: Exposure to asbestos fibres can cause serious health issues, including lung cancer, mesothelioma (a rare form of cancer), and asbestosis (a chronic lung disease). These diseases often have a long latency period, with symptoms appearing years or even decades after exposure. Asbestos-related diseases are responsible for a significant number of deaths each year in the UK.
  3. Lack of Awareness: Despite asbestos being banned in the UK since 1999, many people, including homeowners, contractors, and workers, are still unaware of the presence of asbestos in older buildings. Lack of awareness increases the risk of unintentional exposure and subsequent health hazards.
  4. Renovation and Construction Activities: With ongoing renovation and construction projects across the country, there is a continuous need for awareness and precautions regarding asbestos. Disturbing asbestos-containing materials without proper precautions, such as encapsulation or removal by licensed professionals, can release hazardous fibres into the air, endangering workers and others nearby.
  5. Responsibility of Duty Holders: In the UK, there are legal obligations and responsibilities placed on duty holders, including employers, building owners, and property managers, to manage the risks associated with asbestos. They are required to conduct surveys to identify the presence of asbestos, develop management plans, and ensure proper precautions are taken to protect workers and occupants.
  6. Education and Training: Asbestos awareness campaigns and training initiatives play a crucial role in informing the public, workers, and employers about the risks associated with asbestos exposure. By promoting awareness and providing appropriate training, individuals can understand how to identify and handle asbestos-containing materials safely.

Given these factors, being asbestos aware is essential to protect people from the health risks associated with asbestos exposure. It involves recognising the presence of asbestos, understanding proper handling procedures, and ensuring compliance with legal obligations and safety regulations to prevent unnecessary exposure and safeguard the health and well-being of workers and the general public.
